How to use a portable air conditioner in a tent
A tent air conditioner works like any compressor air conditioner: it moves heat from inside to outside. Get three things right and it will hold a tent cool through a summer night: the hot air has to leave the tent, the condensate has to go somewhere, and the unit has to match the tent's size and your power supply.
01Get the hot air out
Every compressor air conditioner produces more heat on its hot side than it removes from the cold side. If that heat stays in the tent, the tent gets warmer, not cooler. That is why every SpaceCool unit ships with an exhaust hose kit:
| Model | Hose kit in the box | Condensate |
|---|---|---|
| POG-1 | Front exhaust hose interface, dual exhaust hose, adapter fitting | Drainage-free; drain hose included |
| POG-2 | Exhaust hose interface, dual exhaust hose, adapter fitting | Drainage-free; drain hose included |
| COG-2 / COG-2+ | Exhaust hose interface, exhaust hose | Drain hose included |
| Space Cool-C18 | Depends on the configuration ordered; the 2026 series can be placed inside or outside the tent | Drainage-free; 1300ml tray, full-tank alarm and auto stop |
- Use the tent's AC port if it has one: most family and glamping tents have a zipped port or a low vent for a hose.
- No port? Pass the hose through the bottom of the door zip or a mesh window and close the fabric around it. Seal the gap with a towel or the port collar so hot air does not flow back in.
- Keep the hose short and straight. Every bend and every extra half-metre makes the fan work harder.
- Point the exhaust away from the door and away from where people sit outside.
02Decide where the water goes
Cooling pulls water out of the air. In a humid campsite that can be a lot of water over a night.
- Drainage-free units (POG-1, POG-2, Space Cool-C18) handle the condensate themselves, so normal use needs no drain hose. The Space Cool-C18 uses a pump to re-use the condensate and has a 1300ml base tray, so it can run through the night without emptying; when the tray is full it sounds an alarm and stops.
- The COG-2 / COG-2+ uses the included drain hose. Run it outside the tent or into a container, and keep it lower than the unit so the water flows.
- Stand the unit level on a firm base, not directly on the groundsheet in wet grass.
03Size the unit to the tent
| Tent space | SpaceCool model | Cooling | Rated power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bed net, 1–2 person tent | COG-2 / COG-2+ | 3000BTU | 300W |
| 8–10 m² | POG-1 | 5000BTU | 420W |
| 8–10 m², battery power | POG-2 | 6000BTU | 450W |
| 8–10 m², extreme heat | Space Cool-C18 | 6000BTU / 1800W | 570W |
Tent fabric insulates poorly, so the sun matters more than the floor area. Pitch in shade where you can, put a reflective tarp or fly over the roof, close the door while the unit runs and start it before the hottest hour. If the tent sits at the top of a range or in full sun, choose the next model up.
04Power at the campsite
- Hook-up or generator: the POG-1, COG-2 / COG-2+ and Space Cool-C18 run on AC 220V / 110V.
- Battery: the POG-2 runs directly on DC 48V and includes an adapter for 110–240V AC. AC models need a power station or inverter whose AC output is above the unit's rated power.
- Runtime: battery capacity (Wh) ÷ rated power (W) estimates runtime at full rated draw. A 1,000Wh battery gives a 450W POG-2 about 2 hours; compressor cycling once the tent is cool makes it longer, inverter losses on AC models make it shorter.

05Questions buyers ask
Can you use a portable air conditioner in a tent?
Yes. Put the unit inside or beside the tent, run its exhaust hose out through an AC port, a vent or a partly closed door zip, and seal the gap around the hose. Without a way to move the hot air outside, any compressor air conditioner heats the tent instead of cooling it.
Can a portable air conditioner work in a tent without a window?
Yes, as long as the hose can get out. Most camping tents have a vent or an AC port; otherwise pass the hose through the bottom of the door zip and close the zip around it. Evaporative coolers need no hose but add humidity and cool far less.
Do tent air conditioners need to be drained?
Drainage-free models do not need a drain hose in normal use: the POG-1, POG-2 and Space Cool-C18 are drainage-free, and the Space Cool-C18 has a 1300ml tray with a full-tank alarm and auto stop. The COG-2 / COG-2+ uses a drain hose, which comes in the box.
What size air conditioner do I need for my tent?
As a guide: 3000BTU for 5–8 m² (COG-2), 5000BTU for 8–10 m² (POG-1), 6000BTU for 8–10 m² in strong sun or thin-walled tents (POG-2, Space Cool-C18). Size up if the tent sits in direct sun.
How do I power a tent air conditioner at a campsite without hook-up?
Use the POG-2 directly on a 48V battery, or any AC model through a power station whose AC output exceeds the unit's rated power (300W to 570W for the SpaceCool range). Battery Wh ÷ rated power estimates runtime at full rated draw.
